A research-driven foundation for brand strategy

Brand transformation starts with deep insights.

When Omnia set out to reposition Arabsat, a comprehensive research process – stakeholder interviews, competitive analysis, and messaging audits – laid the groundwork for a strategic and impactful rebrand.

Project Overview

In Autumn 2022, I collaborated with Omnia, a Dubai-based branding agency, as a freelance brand strategist. My role was to conduct a Stakeholder Insights & Competitive Analysis to support the brand strategy development for Arabsat, a major satellite services provider in the MENA region.

Omnia engaged me to extract key insights that would inform a repositioning strategy for Arabsat, ensuring the brand aligned with its future ambitions and remained competitive in a rapidly evolving industry.

I presented the findings from my research to Arabsat’s leadership team as part of Omnia’s wider rebranding effort.

Scope of Work

The research process was structured around three core components:

1. Stakeholder Interviews
  • Understanding internal perspectives on the brand’s positioning, strengths, and opportunities.
  • Exploring how the brand’s identity and value proposition could evolve in response to industry trends.
2. Competitive Analysis
  • Identifying where Arabsat sits within the regional and international satellite services market.
  • Mapping competitors’ brand positioning, messaging, and service offerings to uncover differentiation opportunities.
3. Document Review
  • Analysing existing marketing materials, reports, and brand communications to evaluate Arabsat’s current brand narrative.
  • Assessing whether internal messaging was aligned with external market expectations.

Research Concepts & Tactics Employed

The foundation of this project was built on a structured yet exploratory research process, designed to uncover opportunities for Arabsat’s brand evolution. By combining qualitative insights from stakeholder discussions with competitive intelligence, I developed a clear picture of where Arabsat stood in the market and how it could strategically position itself for the future.

This research was designed not only to identify strengths but also to explore areas of untapped potential – insights that would help Arabsat articulate a compelling brand narrative that aligned with both its ambitions and the evolving satellite industry.

Stakeholder Interviews: Capturing Expertise and Vision

Stakeholder interviews play a crucial role in brand strategy development, offering direct insights from the people who live and breathe the brand every day. For this project, I engaged with key Arabsat team members across leadership, strategy, sales, and operations, ensuring a well-rounded perspective on the brand’s positioning and future direction.

These discussions were designed to be open-ended and engaging, guiding stakeholders through questions such as:

  • What defines Arabsat’s role in the industry today?
  • What key strengths set the company apart?
  • What aspirations and innovations will shape the brand’s future?

Through these conversations, a strong narrative of stability, reliability, and regional leadership emerged. There was also a clear enthusiasm for expanding the brand’s perception beyond satellite infrastructure to encompass a broader suite of communication solutions. These insights formed the basis for a refined positioning strategy that could communicate both heritage and forward momentum.

Competitive Analysis: Mapping the Market Landscape

With stakeholder perspectives defined, the next step was to assess Arabsat’s positioning within the competitive landscape. To achieve this, I conducted an analysis of regional and international satellite operators.

The analysis focused on key elements such as:

  • Brand Messaging – How competitors communicate their value proposition.
  • Service Offerings – Whether they position themselves as infrastructure providers or full-scale communications partners.
  • Differentiation Strategies – The unique attributes each competitor emphasizes to stand out in the market.

A clear trend emerged: many international competitors had broadened their positioning beyond satellite services, highlighting their role as integrated connectivity solutions providers. This presented an exciting opportunity for Arabsat to refine its own messaging, ensuring it communicated the full scope of its capabilities while maintaining the trusted reputation it had built over decades.

Document Review: Aligning Brand Messaging with Strategic Vision

The final component of the research process involved an extensive review of Arabsat’s existing brand materials, including marketing presentations, website content, and internal communications. The goal was to ensure that the brand’s external messaging fully reflected its strengths and ambitions.

This analysis provided valuable insights into how Arabsat could enhance its storytelling, ensuring that key attributes such as innovation, customer focus, and strategic partnerships were clearly articulated. It also highlighted the importance of presenting the brand’s evolution in a way that was accessible to both existing partners and new markets.

By combining stakeholder perspectives, competitive insights, and a detailed brand audit, this research provided a comprehensive foundation for Arabsat’s strategic brand positioning. The findings helped shape a clear, compelling narrative that could guide future branding initiatives while reinforcing the company’s industry leadership.

Key Insights & Strategic Implications

The research findings pointed to three core strengths that Arabsat could leverage in its brand positioning:

1.A Stable Partner

Arabsat has built a strong reputation for financial security, regional backing, and decades of experience, which makes it a trusted name in the industry. This stability reassures clients and partners, ensuring long-term confidence in the brand.

2.Relationships First

Arabsat’s culture is deeply relationship-driven, with a strong emphasis on long-term partnerships, customer trust, and tailored service. This approach ensures that clients feel supported and valued, setting Arabsat apart from competitors with a more transactional focus.

3.Always Innovating

Arabsat has historically been recognised for its infrastructure capabilities. The shift towards managed services and next-gen technology solutions allows the brand to reinforce its leadership position while staying relevant in a rapidly advancing industry.

Outcome & Impact

The final Stakeholder Insights & Competitive Analysis report was presented to Arabsat’s leadership, serving as a foundation for Omnia’s subsequent brand strategy recommendations.

While I was not involved in the final stages of the rebranding process, Omnia later rebranded Arabsat, integrating many of the insights from this research.

Omnia’s Arabsat case study acknowledges the role of stakeholder research and competitive analysis in shaping the rebrand.

Reflections: Lessons from the Project

Stakeholder research is critical in uncovering hidden brand opportunities, providing clarity and direction for brand evolution. Competitor analysis ensures that a brand remains relevant while maintaining its unique strengths. A strong brand positioning strategy requires internal alignment – when teams share a unified vision, external messaging becomes far more compelling.

This project reinforced the power of research-driven brand strategy. By blending qualitative stakeholder insights, competitive intelligence, and messaging audits, I helped Omnia create a strategic foundation for Arabsat’s future brand evolution.
